Pupils at TKAT’s Kemnal Technology College, Sidcup and Hylands School, Chelmsford were excited to reach the final stages of a First Give charity competition last month.

Year 9 pupils pitched their chosen charities in a ‘Dragon’s Den’-like final in a bid to win prize money for their causes and gave presentations to a panel of judges. All the presenters showed real passion and enthusiasm.

At Kemnal Technology College, Councillor Chris Price, Ms Morley & Mrs Cooper formed the judging panel.  After 4 outstanding presentations, the winning class 9KR won the grant of £1,000 for their chosen charity, Forget Me Not Cafes, which provide support and companionship to those who are recognising issues with their memory or cognition as well as their carers, family and friends.  

The Deputy Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Jude Deakin was the judge of honour at At Hylands School, where Class 9H gave an impressive pitch for their chosen cause SanctusCharity which supports the homeless and vulnerable people of Essex. They also received a £1,000 cheque. 

Ms Maggie Callaghan - Executive Headteacher at Hylands School said: 

'I am so proud of the determination and hard work our Year 9s committed to this charity drive.  It was uplifting to see our students so focused on supporting others and giving back to our community whilst having a lot of fun too!'

Ms Emma Wride - Head of School at Kemnal Technology College said: 

'Well done to all of our Year 9 students who have taken part in raising money and awareness for their chosen charities. It was great to see them researching their charities, working as teams and engaging with the wider community. Thank you to everyone who made this project a success, I am very proud of you all!'
