Overview of workshop:

At a time when mental health presentations in young people are at unprecedented levels and resources limited; we would like to offer schools the opportunity of training selected staff to extend their basic counselling skills from the first introduction training in order to support managing early interventions with strategies, skills and confidence.

Hosted by Tara Cresswell:

Tara has been working in the field of Psychotherapy for 25 years, specialising in young people. She established and now manages the TKAT Counsellor in Training Programme and has created a Centre of Excellence at Thomas Bennett Community College, Crawley for Counselling provision.

Tara is a trainer and qualified tutor for counselling models, supervises counselling teams and is a consultant for Psychotherapy provision.

Objectives of workshop:

  • To build on the basic counselling skills from the introduction course, knowledge from MHFA course or similar. To explore more sophisticated and creative interventions.
  • To explore within groups our own responses and deepen self-awareness in relation to our students and how we communicate with them and manage behaviour and mental health issues.
  • To practice skills work and receive feedback and observation on sessions.
  • To participate in creative exercises in order that understanding, and knowledge of the subject is deepened.
