TKAT academies celebrate British Science Week

Posted on: 21st Mar 2023

Pupils from across our Trust took part in activities to celebrate British Science Week – (10-19 March) last week. Here's some of the learning experiences our pupils had:

Students from Chichester High School, The Academy Selsey, Havant Academy and Hylands Academy joined the NHS 350 team to find out more on careers in the 8th largest careers provider in the world.

Pupils learned what it like to work as a Biomedical Scientist, a Speech and Language Therapist, a Radiographer, and a Creative Therapist – with inspiring information given about the routes into these professions and the qualifications needed.

Two former Chichester High School students, Jo and Faye, visited their former school to discuss their careers in Physiotherapy and to inspire current pupils to consider science-based careers.

At Havant Academy, the Science Club looked at flame tests, extraction DNA from strawberries and a microscope challenge.

Pupils at Cleeve Park School held a competition to create the tallest, most structurally secure tower, and learned how to follow a method carefully and accurately with minimal help.

AT Kemnal Technology College, Year 5 pupils took part in a special outreach session where they investigated who stole some lizards; they separated blood and analysed the DNA to find the culprit!

At The Academy Selsey and Seal Primary School, pupils looked at Year 5 Forces topics, and with guidance from the Brooklands Museum, some students built a Brooklands Glider.

Students from Hylands School used the British Science Week theme, Connections, to connect Science to the Creative Arts.  Using the A.L.I.C.E at CERN as inspiration, pupils designed fashion lines, wrote creative fiction and comics as if Alice (from Alice in Wonderland) had been shrunk to the size of a sub-atomic particle.

Pupils at Welling School had a visit from ZooLab, where they got to meet some unusual animals and learn about animal adaptations to their environments.

Years 7-10 pupils at Orchards Academy took part in lessons that were dedicated to enhancing their knowledge of and celebrating our brilliant NHS. Students learned about key scientists and events such as Alexandra Fleming and IVF.

Nick Brown, TKAT’s Strategic Lead and Lead Practitioner for Science was very pleased with the efforts across the Trust to celebrate British Science Week. He said:

“It was great to see so many of our pupils getting involved, learning from the activities and taking an interest in science-based careers in the future”.

Well done to all involved!
