TKAT science primary and secondary teams and The Ogden Trust - achieving more together!

Posted on: 12th Dec 2022

The TKAT science primary and secondary teams have been working with the Ogden Trust on a number of projects including support for primary science with super practical physics experiences, our secondary technicians with CPD in 2023 and the launch of a fantastic competition focused on the promotion of Diversity in Science.

This competition had over 100 individual entries from 13 schools across the Trust.

Each school will receive individual recognition for their work but the top 5 were:

* Mia Murphy from Gray's Farm who researched Jewels Burns Solomon and displayed her work in a superb poster.

* Natasha Pagurschi from East Wickham Primary Academy, who produced an amazing diary for Marie Curie complete with lab photos.

* Maddie Phillips from Royal Park Primary Academy, who interviewed her Auntie; she is a Geochemistry Research Technician at the University of Southampton.

* Nirvarikaa Suresh from Hylands School, who thoroughly researched the work of Rosalind Franklin

* and Tangmere Academy (all years) who produced a collection of work and took some of the scientists' research into their own 'labs' in school.

Whilst the work of these ground-breaking scientists wowed the judges, the aim of the competition was to inspire the next generations into finding their place in the world of science whether it be looking into space travel, developing drug therapies to reduce the impact of communicable diseases, or supporting conservation and maintaining the world's unique habitats.

Emma Stow at Northdown Primary School summed it up perfectly:

'The children had fun finding out about different scientists and began to make connections between themselves and the scientist. We had children, saying things such as "I'm from Poland too, maybe I will be a scientist" and "Mary Annings makes me proud to be a girl."

Well done to everyone involved in the competition.
