#OneTKATfamily continue to prioritise and promote a school reading culture

Posted on: 30th Nov 2022

TKAT secondary Headteachers and Reading Leaders attended a Secondary Reading Conference last week.

The central focus for the day was to ensure that all TKAT secondary schools identify and support struggling readers.

We were delighted to hear from keynote speaker Ruth Miskin, who explored how we can support secondary age students to catch-up with phonics specifically.

We also heard from leaders at Rainham School for Girls and Thomas Bennett Community College with reference to their recent OFTSED inspections, on how to ensure that schools implement effective reading programmes.

Work with Laburnum House and Renaissance enabled us to end with the great news that TKAT is giving each child in Year 7 a free book for Christmas; the title 'Proud of me' which has been chosen to celebrate #OneTKATfamily.

Feedback from the day was positive, with colleagues commenting:

"A very useful and thought-provoking reading conference yesterday at TKAT, organised by Kay. I am more confident about what we need to do to ensure that all children are competent readers and can decode effectively in their exams. Ruth Miskin was inspirational, and the Star assessment tool allows us to provide the right interventions at the right level.”

“The presentations from Rainham school for Girls and Thomas Bennett Community College really enriched my overview of a reading strategy as a journey for all students. Thank you to all who presented."

"The conference has really motivated me to develop our school reading programme in new ways, as I now feel I have the tools to confidently share what I've learned with the whole school next week"

Thank you to all involved.
