TKAT's Northdown Primary School team up with Southern Water

Posted on: 17th Jan 2024

TKAT's Northdown Primary School, Margate, has teamed up with Southern Water to install special ‘water slowing’ solutions on their grounds – helping to protect the sewer network during and after heavy rainfall.

By slowing the flow of surface water from hard surfaces like classroom roofs and playgrounds, sewers are less likely to see huge jumps in volume in short time frames – which can go on to trigger overflow water entering the environment, therefore protecting schools and the wider community from flooding.

Pupils have welcomed the arrival of rain garden planters this term, providing an alternative to water being directly channelled into drains and then the combined sewer network, and instead being funnelled into the planters to feed the new shrubs and plants. The planters will work in tandem with the Northdown Small Holding to provide greater understanding of its seed to plate ideology.

The project has also provided an opportunity for Southern Water to engage with Northdown’s pupils, as the TKAT ACE team were employed to assist with the installation of the four new planters. TKAT ACE is a project that supports pupils to overcome barriers to learning.
