Overview:

During Year 7, there is a significant National picture revealed in research and surveys: - engagement and happiness, academic outcomes and attendance, begin to dip for pupils in the summer term - and we never get the majority back to where they were.

Although this often is first seen in attendance data and therefore perceived as an ‘attendance issue’ there are solutions to this disengagement that if tackled can have wide ranging benefits on outcomes for pupils academically, socially and emotionally.

The solutions lie with adaptations to teaching and learning, wellbeing work and pastoral support. The outcome is stronger attendance. To tackle this situation, school teams need to work together.

This course will give you an overview of the three main drivers for Year 7 disengagement and the relatively simple school system tweaks that can support our pupils to remain engaged with us and thriving beyond their initial Year 7 enthusiasm and into Year 8 and beyond.

Additional Information:

Although any interested party is welcome, schools serious about making changes will need to ensure someone with the power to advocate for changes can take the ideas back into school. It is therefore primarily aimed at senior or middle leaders
